Theme: Progress through uncertainty
As the maritime community waits for definitive regulatory guidance from the IMO and national actional plans, efforts to aid sectoral decarbonisation are progressing regardless, albeit in ways that rely less on future fuel solutions and more on collaborative incentivisation and innovation.
Fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen will play a key role in unlocking a sustainable, low carbon maritime future, but the lack of widespread supply and uncertain demand is driving the implementation of other low emissions solutions in the here and now.
A brief history
Since its inception a few years ago, MIAL’s maritime decarbonisation summit series has rapidly evolved to become an essential source of information and ideas exchange for those working in Australian shipping.

Apr 2022 – 1st summit in Melbourne
A brainchild of MIAL CEO Angela Gillham, the summit series was conceived as a platform to allow stakeholders to discover all they needed to know about the fast-moving and ever-evolving decarbonisation landscape.

Oct 2022 – 2nd summit in Sydney
Six months on, the second summit propelled the exciting conversations that had begun in Melbourne. This served to raise the profile of the challenge, the need for collaboration across industry and government.

Jan 2023 – 3rd summit in Perth
While in the west, our expert speakers left us in no doubt that while the technology is on track we are still in urgent need for political levers to drive the changes embraced as inevitable by industry.

May 2024 – 4th summit in Brisbane
Day 2 of our biannual flagship conference was attended by 200 delegates eager to learn about progress while the calls increased for government departments and agencies to unlock levels of investment to match the rhetoric.
