Queensland Government
The Queensland Government is taking strong action on climate change and is supporting projects that capture opportunities that will come from global demand for cleaner, greener and more sustainable products.
Queensland’s coastline stretches over 7,400 kilometres making the maritime industry one of the key enablers of the growth in the state’s economy. To back its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, Queensland is helping reduce global maritime emissions through developing sustainable low and zero carbon marine fuels, including green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The Queensland Government has made strategic investments as part of its Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy to capture emerging domestic and international renewable hydrogen opportunities, including industry changing initiatives such as Yanmar’s renewable hydrogen fuel cell vessel. Leading Japanese maritime manufacturer Yanmar has chosen Queensland to demonstrate its 12-metre-long cruiser that is powered by the latest renewable hydrogen technology.
On a larger scale, in 2023 Queensland company EcoTech Biodiesel provided biofuel for ANL, Woolworths Group, the Port of Brisbane, bp Marine and EcoTech collaboration to undertake a 42-day trial voyage between South East Asia and Australia powered by a locally produced biodiesel fuel. As a low cost, biodegradable and renewable energy source, biofuels have proven themselves to be an immediate and low emission alternative to fossil fuels. Preliminary data shows the voyage using biodiesel would reduce emissions by approximately 17% from diesel.
The Queensland Government is also heavily focused in promoting the career opportunities in the maritime industry and has so far held two maritime careers open days – one in Cairns and one on the Gold Coast. Those two events saw more than 2,500 career seekers attend the over 70 exhibitors representing industry, government, training, and apprenticeship related services. The days was heavily focused on training, skills, and employment pathways, and attendees had the opportunity to connect directly with employers facing skills shortages.
The Queensland Government is also investing heavy in maritime Infrastructure. The Cairns Marine Precinct (CMP) is one of the few ports in Australia that can offer potential expansion opportunities in berth and land facilities to Defence and commercial operators. The Queensland and Australian governments are coinvesting $360 million for a new common-user facility within the CMP that will incorporate a 5000-tonne ship lift, allowing ships of up to 120 metres in length to be repaired and maintained on three hardstand areas, as well as two facilities for blasting and painting vessels.
