World Maritime Day Breakfast
Join us in Sydney for a very special event to mark this globally significant day.
At a glance
To celebrate World Maritime Day, MIAL is hosting a very special breakfast event at Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney.
In addition to a sumptuous breakfast served at a historically significant venue, guests will enjoy an inspirational talk on the search for, and discovery of, the Montevideo Maru.
Torpedoed by an American submarine during World War II, the sinking of the Montevideo Maru became Australia’s worst maritime disaster when it was revealed that 979 Australian troops and prisoners of war had been aboard.
After years of planning, an expedition team led by John Mullen, Director of Silentworld Foundation, used an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle with in-built sonar to detect the wreckage 4,000 metres off the Phillippines coast.
The discovery has been powerfully significant for descendants of the deceased, and brings to an end a terrible chapter in Australia’s military and maritime history.
On World Maritime Day, please join with MIAL, and Silentworld Foundation’s Captain Michael Gooding, to hear more about this extraordinary project and its immeasurable impact.
